New Wave is one of my favorite types of music. It's great for listening or dancing. It was initially marketed as a chart-friendly version of punk. The style was often mixed with other genres such as Funk, Disco, Reggae and Ska.

Tom Petty has jokingly taken credit for "inventing" New Wave. He has been quoted as saying that journalists struggled to define his band, The Heartbreakers. They were not punk rock, but some still wanted to identify them with Elvis Costello and the Sex Pistols. Petty also suggested that the 1978 song "When the Time Comes" from the "You’re Gonna Get It!" album "might have started New Wave. Maybe that was the one."
